This Privacy Policy describes how the PassCitizenship mobile application ("the App", "we", "us", "our") handles information about its users ("you") on Android devices. The App is an independent study aid for the Canadian citizenship test and is not affiliated with the Government of Canada or Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
1. Information We Do Not Collect
The App does not ask you to create an account, sign in, or submit any personal information. We do not collect:
- Your name, email address, phone number or postal address
- Your photos, contacts, calendar, microphone or camera
- Your precise GPS location
- Your immigration status or any document content
Your exam attempts, scores and study progress are stored only on your device in a local database (Room/SQLite). They never leave your phone unless you explicitly back up your device using Android's built-in backup feature.
2. Information Collected by Third-Party SDKs
The App integrates the following third-party SDKs, which may collect limited technical information for the purposes listed below.
2.1 Google AdMob (Advertising)
The App displays banner and interstitial advertisements provided by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect:
- Your advertising identifier (AAID) — a resettable, non-permanent ID
- Your device model, operating system version and language
- Your approximate, IP-based location (country / region level)
- Information about ads shown, clicked or interacted with
This data is used by Google to serve relevant ads and to prevent fraud. You can opt out of personalized advertising at any time in your device settings: Settings → Google → Ads → Delete advertising ID. See Google's advertising policies for full details.
2.2 Firebase Analytics
We use Firebase Analytics to understand how users interact with the App in aggregate (e.g. which screens are most used, how often exams are completed). Firebase Analytics may collect:
- An app-instance ID (anonymous, randomly generated, resettable)
- Device, OS and language information
- Aggregated, non-identifying usage events (screen views, button taps)
Analytics data is anonymized and never linked to a personal identity by us. See Google's Firebase privacy information.
2.3 Firebase Crashlytics
If the App crashes, Crashlytics automatically sends a stack trace and basic device state (model, OS version, free memory, the screen you were on) so we can fix the bug. Crash reports do not contain any personal information you've entered. Crashlytics is enabled in production builds only.
2.4 Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM)
FCM is included to enable optional study-reminder notifications in the future. The App does not currently send push notifications.
3. How We Use Information
The information collected by the third-party SDKs above is used solely to:
- Display in-app advertisements that fund the free version of the App
- Measure aggregate usage so we can improve the App's content and design
- Diagnose crashes and stability issues
We do not sell, rent or share information with third parties for marketing purposes other than the SDKs listed above operating under their own privacy policies.
4. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, we rely on the following legal bases under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):
- Consent — for personalized advertising, requested via a Google User Messaging Platform (UMP) consent form on first launch.
- Legitimate interest — for crash reports and aggregate analytics necessary to keep the App stable and improving.
5. Data Retention
Data stored on your device (exam history, settings, language choice) remains until you uninstall the App or use the in-app Reset progress action in Settings.
Data sent to Google AdMob and Firebase is retained according to Google's published retention periods, typically up to 14 months for Analytics and as needed for ads serving.
6. Children's Privacy
The App is intended for users aged 13 and older. The citizenship test itself is taken by adults aged 18 to 54 in Canada. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information through the App, please contact us and we will take reasonable steps to delete it.
7. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction (Canada — PIPEDA, EU/UK — GDPR, California — CCPA, Quebec — Law 25), you may have the right to:
- Access information held about you by Google services (request directly from Google)
- Reset or delete your device's advertising identifier in Android settings
- Withdraw consent to personalized advertising in the consent form or in Android settings
- Uninstall the App at any time, which deletes all locally stored data
- Contact us about your privacy concerns
8. Permissions Used
The App requests only the following Android permissions:
INTERNET— to load advertisements and send anonymous analyticsACCESS_NETWORK_STATE— to check connectivity before requesting adscom.google.android.gms.permission.AD_ID— to access the advertising identifier (mandatory for AdMob since Android 13)
9. Security
All network communication uses HTTPS. Data stored on your device is protected by Android's standard application sandbox. We rely on Google's infrastructure for the security of advertising and analytics data.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
11. Disclaimer
PassCitizenship is an independent revision aid. The only official study guide for the Canadian citizenship test is "Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship", published free of charge by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada at canada.ca. This App is not endorsed by, affiliated with or sponsored by the Government of Canada.
